Webmaster apologises that this site has not been updated since 20 March.
This has been due to technical problems (in other words the computer went down!!).
We have been fortunate to secure a grant from Shropshire Tourism to re-design the
site. This will be taking place over the coming months. 2001 was quite an eventful year - good and bad.
The Foot and Mouth epedemic practically shutdown tourism and the Green Man Day normally
held on May Day had to be cancelled. All footpaths were closed and stringent rules
concerning dog walking wre in place. Both farmers and tradespeople suffered the
consequences of this terrible disease. However it was not all doom and gloom.
TV Junction Ltd ( a tv production company) came to Clun for six weeks at the height of
Summer to film a children's series for Channel 4 called "Double
Trouble". All the production staff took up the vacancies in the B & Bs in
the area and the Clun Memorial Hall was in constant use for rehersals, and feeding cast,
extras and production staff. The Folk Camp Society booked the Hall for 2 weeks in
August for their Summer Camp and the local pubs benefited from the real ale
enthusiasts. Local shops also benefited by supplying food and other
necessities. The Memorial Hall was awarded a £79,000 grant from the Community Fund
to refurbish the Hall.
We look forward to 2002 with hope that farming and
tourism will recover. Clun is a special place that draws people back again and
again. Everyone will be warmly welcomed.

LOTTERY
WIN FOR CLUN
Clun is celebrating a
lottery award of over £79,500. The grant from the Community Fund will pay for a new
roof and wall cladding for Clun Memorial Hall.
Clun Memorial Hall was
built in the mid-seventies and needs upgrading. This is the first stage of
refurbishment. The work on the roof was undertaken by Swift Roofing Services and is
now complete.. We have also been awarded a £5,000 grant from Shropshire County
Council towards the replacement of the floor in the main hall but we need to
provide further funds to cover the total cost of £15,000 from our own resources and
fundraising. The main part of the floor has been completed and in early December the
finishing coats of varnish and ball court markings will be completed. Although the
floor is not entirely finished we have be able to use the hall. On Friday 2 November
we had a successful re-opening with The Old Rope String Band performing to a capacity
audience. The following evening we celebrated with a Bonfire, Fireworks Display and
Family Disco.
Further information on the Hall and the activities which take place there.
CHILDREN'S TV DRAMA SERIES FILMED IN CLUN
One piece of good news, especially for
local tourism. Television Junction Ltd filmed a children's drama series in
Clun and Bishop's Castle during June and July. The crew weree based in Clun which is
good for the B&Bs. The film is based on a Jackie Wilson childen's story called "Double Trouble".
Ruby and Garnett are identical 10 year
old twins. They live with Dad and Gran in the city; their Mum died when they were young.
Dad finds a new girl friend called Rose and they decide to make a new life in the
country running a second-hand bookshop. BUT Ruby and Garnett don't like Rose; they
don't want to go to the country; they don't want to leave their Gran. Ruby is the
boisterous twin; Garnett is quiet and does everything Ruby says - cos' twins always do
everything together. It is a fun story but with serious undertones. Should
twins always be the same, do the same. Are they exactly the same? When a
single parent finds a new partner, how does it effect the children? And moving to a
very different place, away from friends and familiar things can be very upsetting.
In effect the book is about coping with change, which none of us are very good at. [My
thanks to Jodie and Cerian Lancaster for lending me the book. It was a good read]
The series is to be shown at the end of
the year or early in the New Year. Watch this space for news of the actual dates.
